Lunch With My Sister...
Holly and I went out yesterday for lunch with my sister Susan. The place we planned on going was closed. An eatery being closed at 1pm on the Saturday after Black Friday is a pretty good sign that they're out of business! I looked through the windows and the chairs were stacked on top of the tables like they had closed for the night but that could have been days or weeks ago.
We didn't want to travel far to find lunch so we stopped at another restaurant on the island called "Sailor's Grill" that we had driven past for several years and never tried. It was nicer on the inside than it looked on the outside. The view of the water didn't hurt either. Lunch was good and we were happy to add another place to our list of "possibles" when we go out.
Lost one and gained one. :-)
Holiday Shopping...
Onine holiday shopping is gaining momentum. Every year more and more of the traditional holiday retailing is done via internet. And as smart phones become even easier to shop from it only gets more popular. Enter... "Black Friday". :-) And now... "Black Thursday".
Funny... I thought that day was already taken for a holiday called "Thanksgiving". (Shaking head now!) What's next? Maybe in 2012 we can skip the family get-togethers, holiday meal, football, and just go straight to "Shopping Day".
If it seems a bit lame to me, imagine how it feels to the store employees that used to have the day off to now be going in to work before the leftovers even cool down in the fridge. I know some will say "At least they have a job to go to...", I feel like they really could close the store for one day and give their employees the holiday off. I may be in the minority there. :-)
Embroidery Magazine Arrives
When we started RV'ing I dropped our magazine subscriptions to cut down on the volume of forwarded mail. Recently we started using a mail forwarding service and I realized that it wasn't imposing on the mail forwarding company to handle magazines too, so I picked up subscriptions again.
I LOVE magazines. The information is focused, timely, and always well presented.
Yesterday our "Creative Machine Embroidery" arrived for the first time in years. Nice magazine! Good to see it again without having to find it on the shelves at stores I happend to be in when it's available.

My Sister In Florida Now...
My slightly older sister (4 years older) moved to Pensacola a few weeks ago. The company she works for had an opening in the area and she asked them for a transfer. They did and she's here now. She makes dentures for a living and enjoys sewing and gardening as hobbies.
We've seen her several times since we arrived here a little over a week ago. I'm going to like having family close by after many years of being just me and Holly and her relatives. "Close by" to me is anything where you can hop in the car and get to without stopping for a restroom. So the definition of "close by" changes as we get older doesn't it? LOL!
Dog Lovers Read This...
(If you're not a dog person skip to the next bold headline)
All our dogs have had different personalities. Our white boxer "Pearl" is what would be called a "Melancholie" personality. If you've read "Personality Plus" by Florence Littauer then you know what that means. If you haven't read it, then a short description would be "a person who follows the rules to the letter" as one of the traits of a mel.
Pearl was standing in front of me this week giving me "the look" that says she wants something and it's up to me to figure out what that something might be.
"Outside?" I asked. No response.
"Kisses...?" Nope. ( It's worth asking :-)
"Water?" Yup.
That was it by the change in expresssion so I got up and refilled her water dish and she was happy. Now the funny part is that 6 feet away was the water bowl for Onyx and it was full of water. But Pearl would not drink out of Onyx's water dish! Funny thing though, Onyx drinks anywhere she finds water. What characters!
Your Opinion Of The PR1000E?
(From ATW Forum post by Betsco)
"I'm thinking of upgrading to a PR1000E from my current PR600II. I like the the thread upgrade and increased sizes of the frames. If you have the PR1000E - how do you like it's actual performance, ease of operation? I do lots of towels, carhart jackets and baby things and I'm really looking for that bigger size - the split option isn't bad.
I'd love to hear some opinions on this machine from anyone who uses it vs the salesperson at the store. It comes with the upgrade to PE Next which scares me a little from what I've read on forums. Your opinions Negative or positive would be appreciated. Thank you."
Thanks for asking Betsco. Any ATW members who have purchased the PR1000E or the BabyLock version, please post answers in the ATW forum.

Breakfast With Friends Today...
Holly and I will be going to breakfast with our friends Mark and Denise this morning. Denise digitizes for us as a contractor. Her mom is Dot Pike who was a Baby Lock educator for years and an amazing quilter. She will be joining us at breakfast too. It will be the first time we've seen Dot since we got back to Florida.

Larry & Holly In Florida Now...
We left Sunday morning from Chicago area and got to Paducah Sunday night. Internet there was HORRIBLE. Stayed all day Monday so we could visit with Nita and left on Tuesday morning. Landed in Birmingham on Tuesday night and internet there was HORRIBLE too. I did as little as possible from there online. Left on Weds morning and got to FLA on Weds night. Yeah! Finally online again with decent speed.
Both Paducah and Birmingham connections were SLOWER than dialup. I was NOT happy but can't fix that. We got set up to work again on Thursday and have been playing catch-up since.
Important Reminder - Have You Backed Up Your Designs Lately?
From a post in the ATW forum...
"Last week our computer was freezing and acting up..I didn't like how it was acting, so I moved my candywrapper and embroidery designs to my external.. soooooooo thankful I did. A couple days ago I couldn't sign on,kept telling me I had a worm virus and a PC scan popped up. Dummy me let it do the scan, as I thought my DH had installed it. He was at work at the time. Everything was wiped out, even the icons. It's totally blank now. Luckily he knows quite a bit about desktops and planning on using the old hard drive as a secondary and installing a new one plus reloading. That is if the old hard drive isn't damaged. I wanted to share this with you, in case you have problems. The "PC scan" was a virus as I was told. The virus got past a firewall and other security measures. So please please be careful and back up those desisgns."

NOTE: ATW members can click "LEARN EMBROIDERY" on the top menu then choose "COMPUTERS & SOFTWARE FOR EMBROIDERY". There are LOTS of articles and videos in there about backing up and how to do it in various ways. You can use a CD or DVD but best two ways are 1) use external hard drive and 2) use online backup service like Carbonite or Mozy. -- Larry
Another Computer Problem!
"Yesterday my son gave me a laptop he wasn't using. It has Windows 7 just like the computer I've been using for a few months now. We downloaded my embroidery programs to the laptop. When I tried to download a designs to make sure everything is working, a funny thing happened. I got a different screen and I can't save my designs to a folder! The desk computer opens with Open, Open Command Prompt Here, Scan with, Restore previous versions, Include in library, Send to, Copy to folder, Move to folder, Cut, Copy, Create shortcut, Delete, Rename, Properties. (Hope this is making sense to somebody) The laptop opens with Open, Encrypt by ADSM, Decrypt by ADSM, Build ADSM Vault, Share with, Restore previous versions, Include in library, Send to, Cut, Copy, Create shortcut, Delete, Rename, Properties. There's NO copy to folder, move to folder. I don't know why these boxes are different or why copy / move to folder is missing. Anybody have a clue what's going on or how to fix this?" -- Melissa
Is this an ASUS brand computer? Is Norton (Symanrec) software installed? Either Symantec is "protecting you" from doing what you want to do, or the ASUS brand computer is set to store your stuff in a "vault" that is not compatible with the rest of the world. Turn off the Symantec software and get a different antivirus program (the free version of AVG is great) and/or remove the ASUS brand special software. One or both of those programs are messing up your computer!

A Special "Thank You" To Veterans...
(Posted in ATW forum by RoseDanie)
"The following was posted on facebook by my daughter about her 7 year old son, my wonderful grandson:
"So proud of and thankful for my thoughtful, loving Connor. The first thing he did this morning was sit down and draw pictures for our neighbor who is a veteran... then loaded up a bag of his prized army men and took them across the street to say "thank you." ? that boy."
(Thanks for sharing this story Rose! There's a young man that has more understanding than lots of adults! -- Larry )
"Nutmeg" Winner In Stitches "Golden Needle Awards"
"I just gotta shout it out here, I WON!!! For years I have looked at the entries in Stitches Magazine for the Golden Needle Awards, this year I thought I would give it a shot. I was totally surprised to win in one of the categories. I even got the cover of the magazine! For any of you that want to check it out online here is a link. In the upper right hand corner you can skip to (or look at all of magazine) page 38 where the story begins."

I am a happy camper!! -- Nutmeg
(Congratulations Nutmeg! That's way cool. For those who don't already know, Nutmeg is a terrific digitizer and deserves plenty of awards for her designs. -- Larry)

It's Sunday morning and if all goes well we will be in Kentucky this evening. I say the "if" part because this will be the 4th departure date we have set for leaving this Fall with 3 times having problems jump up.
The first planned date had 30-40 mph winds so we postponed leaving. The second date had Pearl in for surgery to remove stones in her bladder. The third date had compliacations from the surgery that prevented us from leaving. (Pearl is doing great now!)
Fingers crossed, prayers said, and a four-leaf clover thrown in for extra measure, we hope to leave in a couple hours and hope to arrive in KY before sunset. And we hope to be in Florida by Wednesday or Thursday this week.
Digitizers Apprentice Contest: Week 6 - Stuff Happens
Holly did yesterday's webinar with the contestants. This weeks episode was scheduled to be titled 'Stuff Happens" and Holly had planned on simulating how you have to scramble to meet deadlines when things go wrong. As it turns out, she didn't have to simulate anything!
Just before the webinar started, Holly came down with what I hope was just a passing thing and not a 24 hour bug or worse. She did the webinar but it was iffy for a while that she would even be able to talk on the phone.
The list of "stuff" that happened to the students this week was amazing. A dongle quit working on one student on Friday night and she couldn't work while she waited for the replacement to arrive on Tuesday. Another student was in the snow storm and had no electricty. Another one had a grand-baby born but not on schedule. Another had her only embroidery machine quit working. Etc. Out of 16 students in the class, 9 had major disruptions to their work flow. No need to simulate. :-)
The video from yesterday's class is available here...
Generations 30-Day Test Drive Event starts November 15th. Sign up here!
It's time for me to pack up my computer unplug from the electric from the camper and hit the open road. The sun will be up in a few minutes and we want to get going early. Hopy you have a great day and enjoy some time for embroidery this week.
